Grandmother of the three girls was a doctor. When the girls grew up, and two of them went to school, grandmother showed them her "treasures" which she had got as a casual gift from her father. She was the only daughter of the doctor's family. As a child she had the opportunity to watch the work of her father at a medical laboratory. And some medical items of the laboratory glassware, which went out of use in the lab, her daughter had got. She cherished them and took out just to admire them. Nobody could either touch or watch them. Would you like to know what among her priceless gifts were? There were three items in the ancient Granny's bag. These were two glass tubes and a tubing pinch clamp. Each of the three sisters was proud every time when got the opportunity to see those items. They knew well that no one of Granny's friends could be in their shoes. And only when Granny's son, the three sisters' Dad, who was a seven years old boy, got a happy chance to see sometimes those items. But the son was not interested of medicine or chemistry. You see, he never wanted to have those priceless gifts. But the granddaughters did! Grandma noticed the interest of girls in vocational items and got out tubes and tubing pinch clamps to encourage granddaughters. And when they began to think about the future profession at the age of 10-12 years old, Granny allowed them to play “laboratory” and used those items for their game. Lucy's daughters told lively how they took different liquids with those glass tubes, how they filled cans with those liquids with the tubes, how they tried to wrap the tubes with newspaper to hold them in the tubing pinch clamp. They played all over the nights while their parents were busy with their adults' work. Till the girls were going on with their “laboratory” game, there Granny brought them new laboratory items for supporting their interest of her own profession. Her gifts became a set of pH papers, a dropper and a thermometer. But the dream of her granddaughters was a wick nonalcoholic lamp and stand which needed to be provided with denatured alcohol as fuel. It should be very dangerous. They had to wait for this gift for a long time. |
